Class 1 intermediate (Feb 25)
combined class with intro. and intermediate groups.

Review: Print/web adjustments, Actions

3 kinds of size!

  • file size
  • height and width
  • dpi (pixel size)

Op•ti•mize - To make an image look its best within a particular environment (home printer, web, or commercial pub.)

•In•ter•po•la•tion - adding or subtracting pixels as bitmap matrices change (automatic "batch" image processing is not always best)

print-outs have variable dpi. Depending on the capacity of the printer, the actual pixels change size

Scale images with photoshop to approximate print height/width and:
   ~100 dpi (web documents)
   ~300 dpi (home printers)
   >300 dpi (magazines

More is not better! larger than necessary image file sizes used in a word document increases the word document's file size too.

internet pixels are always the same size: 72 dpi (height and dpi image settings are ignored.)

Therefore optimized
  •thumbnails (~150px) &   •enlargements (~800px)
are necessary.

More is not better! larger file sizes slow downloading time.

Multiscan: Jeri C
Multiscan example: I'll discuss briefly tonight (Feb. 26) & elabotate in keystoning lesson.

Assignment: Go through Introductory page concepts, tools and processes (sorry they're in shorthand) before next class meeting.

Further study: discrete vs. continuous info:
Emulsion photos are continuous (analog) up to the size of the film grain.
Digital photos (even raw format) have finite pixel size. They are 'samples' of the real, continuous world.

diminishing returns ... more is not always better.

Always view images at "actual pixels" setting when sizing and optimizing.

  • When increasing image size - use "bucubic smoother"
  • When decreasing image size - use "bicubic sharpen"

Class 2 intermediate (Mar 4) troubleshooting
Q&A based on Assignment

digital analysis aids:

squint!

  1. zoom in / out
  2. cutout
  3. mosaic
  4. find edges
  5. threshold

The goal: simplify the image to prevent details (or words) from distracting you.

(Note the different image)

Assignment: Analyze one of your in-process photos via cutout, find edges, threshold, and mosaic.

Bring them to class (on your flash USB drive.)

Class 3 intermediate (Mar 11)

You can't optimize
if you can't analyze...

Review; Print/web adjustments
New: Actions (two or more step procedures you can build yourself and use to greatly reduce work time.)

Constructive Criticism

Thumper Rule:

1. If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.

2. Don't cop-out: "Isn't that interesting?"

3. Avoid left-handed compliments:

a. What's it supposed to be?
b. The materials alone must be worth...

Stop. Look. Listen.

If two people take the same stock photo and modify it through Photoshop's "emboss" filter with default settings, is it art? -no (identical outcomes)

If a skilled artist copies the Mona Lisa so well that it is indistinguishable from the original, is it art? -no, it's a reproduction.

If an artificial intelligence program generates artwork a-la an artist  is it art? -see MONICA-Mondrian Project

PS: Never call it "computer generated art!" "Assisted," - definitely. The computer is a new brush.
